If You Were ‘Leftover’… (Gospel Light Minute X #277)

Daniel Whyte III

Daniel Whyte III

This week, HBO’s post-apocalyptic drama, The Leftovers, returned for its third and final season. The series, based on a novel of the same name by Tom Perrotta, takes place in two small towns a few years after a rapture-like event in which 140 million people vanish from the earth. In the aftermath of the “Sudden Disappearance,” some people strive to return to normal despite the loss that they have experienced. Others turn to religious cults, an abundance of which pop up in the aftermath, in order to make sense of the world. Notable among these cults are the “Guilty Remnant” who always wear white and exist to repeatedly remind the world of the fact that they were left behind, or in the show’s cheeky terminology, “the leftovers.” Others spend their time trying to figure out if a new Jesus-like figure is coming and who he is if he has in fact already arrived.

The Leftovers is one of the latest products of our culture’s obsession with the apocalypse, the end times, and the possibilities of how the world — and humanity may end. While much of what the Bible predicts will happen in the end times is subject to debate, the Bible does tell us that the beginning of the end will be marked by an event called the Rapture, in which all believers in Jesus Christ will be taken from this earth to Heaven to be with God. No doubt, after the Rapture, the world will see much of what takes place in The Leftovers — people trying to cope, trying to go back to normal, turning to religion for understanding, or searching for a messiah to save them. It will be a dark time for the world. And many will soon realize that those who were taken will indeed be better off.

If the Rapture were to occur today — and the Bible teaches that it can take place at any time — would you be ready? Would you be one of the taken or one of the leftovers? Would you be one of those at home in Heaven with God or one of those left behind struggling to understand what happened?

If you have never trusted Jesus Christ as your Lord and Saviour you are not ready. I am going to show you how you can trust Christ as your Saviour so that you will not be left behind.

First, you must realize and admit that you are a sinner and that you have broken God’s laws. The Bible says in Ecclesiastes 7:20: “For there is not a just man upon earth that doeth good, and sinneth not.” Romans 3:23 reads: “For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God.” In fact, I am the chief of sinners, so don’t think that you’re alone.

Second, you must understand that there is a penalty for sin. The Bible states in Romans 6:23: “For the wages of sin is death…” This is both spiritual death and physical death. We die physically and go to the grave because of sin and we die spiritually and go to hell because of sin.

Third, you must understand that you are on the road to hell because of your sins. Jesus Christ said in Matthew 10:28: “And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.” The Bible says in Revelation 21:8: “But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.”

Fourth, you must accept the fact that you cannot do anything to save yourself! The Bible states in Ephesians 2: 8, 9: “For by grace are ye saved through faith: and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God. Not of works, lest any man should boast.”

Fifth, you must accept the fact that God loves you more than you love yourself, and that He wants to save you from hell. Because of God’s love for you, he sent his Son, Jesus Christ, to pay the penalty for your sin. Jesus Christ said in John 3:16, “For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” Because God sent His Son, Jesus Christ, to die on the cross for our sins, we can live with God in Heaven for all eternity after we die.

Finally, with these facts in mind, you must repent of your sins, believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and pray and ask Him to come into your heart and save you this very moment. The Bible states in the book of Romans 10:9, 13: “That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised Him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.” “For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.”

If you are willing to believe on the Lord Jesus Christ for salvation, please pray with me the following simple prayer: Holy Father God, I realize that I am a sinner and that I have done some bad things in my life. For Jesus Christ sake, please forgive me of my sins. I now believe with all of my heart that Jesus Christ died for me, was buried, and rose again. Lord Jesus, please come into my heart and save my soul and change my life today. Amen.

If you believed in your heart that Jesus Christ died on the cross, was buried, and rose again, allow me to say, congratulations on doing the most important thing in life and that is trusting Jesus Christ as your Lord and Saviour!

Believe by faith. Share the faith. And keep the faith! God Bless You!

Rihanna, Umbrella, Jesus, and You (Gospel Light Minute X #275)

Daniel Whyte III

Daniel Whyte III

An umbrella is a protective instrument, a folding canopy mounted on a pole that is used to protect an individual from the rain or from the sun’s heat. Travelers, the second largest business insurance and third-largest personal insurance company in the United States, uses a red umbrella as its logo. It’s slogan is “America’s umbrella”, which speaks of its mission to protect its customers from the repercussions of property damage, property loss, theft, and auto accidents.

One of the most popular songs of recent years is Rihanna’s “Umbrella.” In it, the singer talks about inviting a friend to stand under her umbrella for protection against the trials of life. She told a magazine, “An umbrella is protection, it protects you from rain. The rain in this case is negativeness and vulnerability.”

While those are great things to be protected from, allow me to share with you something more important that you need to be protected from as well — something which God has provided an umbrella against.

The Bible tells us that because we are all sinners, we are deserving of God’s wrath. The Bible says, “We all had our conversation [our lifestyle] in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind; and were by nature the children of wrath.” Our sinfulness destines us for death and eternal punishment in Hell.

But, because God loves us, He has provided us an umbrella, a shield, to protect us from His wrath which falls on the ungodly and on the “children of disobedience.” This umbrella is Jesus Christ, God’s Son, who came to earth in order to take our sins and the punishment for our sins on Himself. Yes, God, “who is rich in mercy, because of his great love wherewith he loved us, even when we were dead in sins,” made a way for us to be saved. On the cross, Jesus did what was necessary to shield us from God’s wrath. He died in our place and suffered on our behalf. But we must make the decision to get under the umbrella of salvation through Him. We must choose to take advantage of the mercy and grace offered to us as a shield from God’s wrath.

Not only did Rihanna invite you to get under her umbrella but our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ invites you to get under His umbrella which is far more real and far more important. He said in Matthew 11:28, “Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.” If you are ready to get under the divine umbrella through faith in Jesus Christ, allow me to show you how you can do so today.

The Bridge is Out! (Gospel Light Minute X #274)

This past week, a fire erupted beneath a bridge on a major highway in Atlanta. The fire was so intense that it caused part of the bridge to collapse. Thousands of people depend on that stretch of highway every day, and it is infamous for its rush-hour congestion. Amazingly, thanks to firefighters who got drivers to turn back before the bridge collapsed, not one person died or was injured in this incident.

As I thought about this story, I was reminded of an old illustration that is often used to encourage people to trust Christ as Saviour. If a bridge is washed out in a storm, a wise person would take heed to the sign that says, “BRIDGE IS OUT. TURNAROUND, DON’T DROWN.” He or she would take heed to the man standing by the side of the road waving his arms frantically and yelling that the bridge is out. However, the foolish person says, “I’ll go and see for myself.”

What if some people in Atlanta had decided to ignore the warnings of the firefighters and go see for themselves if the bridge was really out? They might not be here today to tell the story. Continue Reading…

Thanks for Repairing the Tomb of Jesus, but He is Still Not There (Gospel Light Minute X #273)

Daniel Whyte III

Daniel Whyte III

This is the “chief of sinners,” Daniel Whyte III, president of Gospel Light Society International, reminding you of what the Bible says, that “Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners” like you and me.

This past week, the traditional tomb of Jesus in Jerusalem was re-opened to the public after nine months of meticulous repairs. According to CNN, the burial chamber where Christ is believed to have been entombed is situated in the heart of the Christian quarter in Jerusalem’s Old City. The small limestone and marble structure built on the site identified in the 4th century as Jesus’ resting place following his crucifixion received much-needed repairs. The repairs were completed a few weeks ahead of Easter when, once again, thousands of believers from around the world will converge on the site to mark the death, burial, and resurrection of Christ. After the Easter season, a second phase of restoration is set to begin. The first phase cost over $3.7 million.

Caring for the resting place of someone who has passed away is not unheard of. In fact, there are “grave care” businesses that are paid to clear leaves, cut the grass, and place flowers on the tomb of a loved one who has died. People often go and spend a few moments at the grave in order to feel closer to the one who is gone.

But all the fuss about Jesus’ tomb is taking place for an entirely different reason. People don’t flock to the site each year because it is His final resting place. Millions of dollars aren’t being spent to restore the structure because His body is actually there. Rather, people visit the site because Jesus is NOT there. He did not stay in His grave. Although He died and was buried, Acts 2:31 says, “His soul was not left in hell, neither his flesh did see corruption (or decay in the grave).”

The thousands who make pilgrimage to Jerusalem each year are going to be reminded of the resurrection power that Jesus brought to the world. Just as He rose from the dead and conquered the grave, He is the means by which each of us can do the same. Jesus is God’s Son who took on human flesh so that He might bear the punishment of our sins on Himself. Without His sacrifice, each of us would die, go to the grave, and stay in the grave. But, because of what Jesus did on the cross, if we place our faith and trust in Him, we can do as He did and one day rise from the grave to live where He is forever.

Do you want to place your faith and trust in Jesus Christ so that you can be resurrected to live with Him forever? It will only take a minute to make this important decision. Allow me to show you how you can do so right now.

Even Though This Place Has A Great Wall, the Gates Are Always Open, and You Are Always Welcome Here (Gospel Light Minute X #272)

One of the biggest debates taking place in our world today surrounds the issue of immigration and refugees who leave their own conflict-ridden lands to find a better life elsewhere. Over the past two years, 1.3 million refugees from the Middle East and North Africa have entered Europe. In the same time period, over 150,000 refugees entered the United States. These people are running from war, persecution, violence, and lack of economic opportunity.

However, many people are not willing to welcome these refugees and immigrants with open arms. Some see them as a threat to security, as a drain on resources, or as a diluting influence on the country’s culture. Growing support for nationalism around the globe has put a spotlight on the beliefs of those who feel that a country ought to take care of its own before trying to help others. Nationalist candidates in European countries are pushing for stronger barriers to entrance. And, in the U.S., the president has issued a travel ban halting immigration from certain countries and strengthening vetting of refugees and migrants overall.

The desire to go to a better land that is felt by thousands of people today has been a mark of the human race almost since the beginning of history. We are always seeking out greener pastures, better opportunities, that special place where all our dreams will come true. While in this world, we will never find that place; any place we settle will fall short of our dreams. But there is a place beyond this world that we cannot begin to even imagine. In this place, the hopes and dreams of all people will reach their highest realization. And, best of all, the doors of this place are always open and everyone is welcome there. Continue Reading…
