Even Though This Place Has A Great Wall, the Gates Are Always Open, and You Are Always Welcome Here (Gospel Light Minute X #272)

One of the biggest debates taking place in our world today surrounds the issue of immigration and refugees who leave their own conflict-ridden lands to find a better life elsewhere. Over the past two years, 1.3 million refugees from the Middle East and North Africa have entered Europe. In the same time period, over 150,000 refugees entered the United States. These people are running from war, persecution, violence, and lack of economic opportunity.

However, many people are not willing to welcome these refugees and immigrants with open arms. Some see them as a threat to security, as a drain on resources, or as a diluting influence on the country’s culture. Growing support for nationalism around the globe has put a spotlight on the beliefs of those who feel that a country ought to take care of its own before trying to help others. Nationalist candidates in European countries are pushing for stronger barriers to entrance. And, in the U.S., the president has issued a travel ban halting immigration from certain countries and strengthening vetting of refugees and migrants overall.

The desire to go to a better land that is felt by thousands of people today has been a mark of the human race almost since the beginning of history. We are always seeking out greener pastures, better opportunities, that special place where all our dreams will come true. While in this world, we will never find that place; any place we settle will fall short of our dreams. But there is a place beyond this world that we cannot begin to even imagine. In this place, the hopes and dreams of all people will reach their highest realization. And, best of all, the doors of this place are always open and everyone is welcome there. Continue Reading…

GLMX #268: All Lives Matter to God

This past week has been one of the most distressing weeks in America’s recent history. Again, three young black men — Alton Sterling, Philando Castile, and Delrawn Small — were shot dead by police under circumstances that many believe did not have to end in a fatality.

And then, on Friday, five white police officers in Dallas, TX — Lorne Ahrens, Michael Smith, Michael Krol, Patrick Zamarripa, Brent Thompson — were gunned down by a black man as they were overseeing a peaceful demonstration in the city.

Once again, the nation is confronted by crucial questions as many engage in soul-searching regarding how we got to this place in America. Once again, slogans have been thrown about — “black lives matter”, “all lives matter”, “blue lives matter,” etc. Racial conflict, and its sometimes deadly consequences, has unfortunately led to increased division in our country. This is evident even in the belief of some that one of the aforementioned slogans should be used to the exclusion of all others.

Whatever position you take on issues of race, police brutality, and injustice in this country, I can tell you without a doubt that all lives matter to God. You may not feel like your life or the lives of a certain group of people matter to the government or to society at large, but I can say without hesitation that every life matters to God. In God’s eyes, every person is deserving of being treated with respect, honor, fairness, and dignity because every human being is made in God’s image. Most importantly, every life counts to God because every life represents a soul worth saving from sin and the punishment of sin.

The world continues to reel from a succession of increasingly deadly terror attacks. It seems as though before the modern news cycle can even provide conclusive details on one attack, another one has occurred.

Perhaps the most startling thing about these attacks is that they occur not on battlefields far from population centers, but right in the midst of places where ordinary citizens, people looking forward to the next day, congregate and live life. Some were preparing to board a plane or pick up loved ones arriving at the airport in Istanbul. Some were shopping at markets in Baghdad. Some were eating at a restaurant in Bangladesh. Some were partying at a nightclub in Orlando. Some were vacationing in Somalia.

None thought that they would die in the way they did or at the time they did. They were caught unawares. Continue Reading…

GLMX #266: After Christmas

Another Christmas celebration has come and gone. While many were reminded of the birth of Christ through the numerous displays of nativity scenes throughout this season, we sometimes forget that Jesus’ birth is just the beginning of a much larger story. So, as millions of people try to squeeze in some last minute shopping to take advantage of holiday season deals, and others make plans for the New Year, let’s pause to explore what happened after Christmas.

The child born on the first Christmas hundreds of years ago was Jesus. He is God’s Son who was sent to Earth in order to save the human race from sin and the punishment of sin. From his infancy, to his teenage years, and on into adulthood, Jesus never sinned. He grew up around sin and among sinful people like us, yet he never sinned. This was important because of what he was born to do.

Jesus was born to die for the sins of the human race. He was a sacrifice, and his Father, God, required that the sacrifice be perfect. If Jesus didn’t die and suffer in our place, each and every one of us would have to die and suffer in hell for eternity. Continue Reading…
