Soul singer, Curtis Mayfield, wrote a popular song titled “People Get Ready.” It was first recorded by the Impressions in 1965 and has since been named by Rolling Stone magazine as the 24th greatest song of all time, by Britain’s Mojo magazine as one of the ten best songs of all time, and it was included in The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame’s 500 Songs that Shaped Rock and Roll. It has influenced a wide range of singers such as Bob Marley, Bob Dylan, Michelle Wright, Bruce Springsteen, and John Mayer.

The song carries an important message which Mayfield said was influenced by the message of the church. The lyrics of the song are as follows:

People get ready; there’s a train comin’
You don’t need no baggage, you just get on board
All you need is faith to hear the diesels hummin’
You don’t need no ticket, you just thank the Lord

People get ready, there’s a train to Jordan
Picking up passengers, coast to coast
Faith is the key, open the doors and board then
There’s hope for all among those loved the most

There ain’t no room for the hopeless sinner
Who would hurt all mankind just to save his own
Have pity on those whose chances are thinner
Cause there’s no hiding place from the Kingdom’s Throne

People get ready; there’s a train comin’
You don’t need no baggage, just get on board
All you need is faith to hear the diesels hummin’
You don’t need no ticket, just thank the Lord

In this song, the train is a metaphor for Jesus Christ — the only person by whom we can get to Heaven. The difference between the train to Heaven and regular trains, however, is that (1) you don’t have to take anything with you because everything you could ever need or want will be at your destination, and (2) you don’t have to pay for a ticket to get on this train ride to Heaven. Here are two verses straight from the Bible that explain this further.

In John 14:2, Jesus Christ told His disciples, “In my Father’s house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you.” Jesus Christ is building a place in Heaven for all of those who believe in Him. In Heaven, we will have everything that we could ever need or want. We will have eternal life, happiness, joy, and a relationship with God. Not only that, but we will have all of the food, drink, and physical provisions that we could ever desire. What’s more, is that we won’t be at and drink because we have to, but simply because it will be enjoyable to do so. Don’t you want to get on this train ride to Heaven?

The Bible also says in Ephesians 2:8, “For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God.” We don’t have to pay our way to Heaven. This verse backs up what Curtis Mayfield wrote in his song — “all you need is faith.” We don’t get onboard this train to Heaven by any actions of our own. Our ticket to Heaven is strictly “a gift of God.”

Dear friend, the invitation stands open for you to get onboard the train to Heaven. Don’t miss your opportunity today because tomorrow is not promised you. One day, it will be too late to get onboard, so I want to give you the opportunity to join the train ride to Heaven now. Here’s how:

First, accept the fact that you are a sinner, and that you have broken God’s law. The Bible says in Romans 3:23: “For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God.”

Second, accept the fact that there is a penalty for sin. The Bible states in Romans 6:23: “For the wages of sin is death…”

Third, accept the fact that you are on the road to hell. Jesus Christ said in Matthew 10:28: “And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.” Also, the Bible states in Revelation 21:8: “But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.”

Now that is bad news, but here’s the good news. Jesus Christ said in John 3:16: “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” Just believe in your heart that Jesus Christ died for your sins, was buried, and rose from the dead by the power of God for you so that you can live eternally with Him. Pray and ask Him to come into your heart today, and He will.

Romans 10:9 & 13 says, “That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved… For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.”

If you believe that Jesus Christ died on the cross for your sins, was buried, and rose from the dead, and you want to trust Him for your salvation today, please pray with me this simple prayer: Holy Father God, I realize that I am a sinner and that I have done some bad things in my life. I am sorry for my sins, and today I choose to turn from my sins. For Jesus Christ sake, please forgive me of my sins. I believe with all of my heart that Jesus Christ died for me, was buried, and rose again. I trust Jesus Christ as my Savior and I choose to follow Him as Lord from this day forward. Lord Jesus, please come into my heart and save my soul and change my life today. Amen.

If you just trusted Jesus Christ as your Saviour, and you prayed that prayer and meant it from your heart, I declare to you that based upon the Word of God, you are now saved from Hell and you are on your way to Heaven. Welcome to the family of God! Congratulations on doing the most important thing in life and that is receiving Jesus Christ as your Lord and Saviour.
