To Hurricane Harvey and Hurricane Irma Victims, When CNN and Everybody Else is Gone, the Lord Will Still Be With You (Gospel Light Minute X #288)

This Sept. 7, 2017 photo provided by the Dutch Defense Ministry shows storm damage in the aftermath of Hurricane Irma, in St. Maarten. Irma cut a path of devastation across the northern Caribbean, leaving thousands homeless after destroying buildings and uprooting trees. Significant damage was reported on the island that is split between French and Dutch control. (Gerben Van Es/Dutch Defense Ministry via AP)

After three weeks of non-stop hurricane coverage, it seems that things are finally calming down. Gone are the weather experts expounding the dangers of the storm. Gone are the government officials urging people to evacuate or take precautions. Gone are the TV reporters struggling to stand up in hurricane-force winds during live reports as the storm makes landfall.

Within a few more weeks, the eyes of the nation will turn away from twin calamities, Hurricane Harvey and Hurricane Irma, the likes of which we’ve never seen. But, during that time, thousands will be returning to their homes (or what’s left of them), mourning their losses, trying to rebuild, and in many cases, simply trying to survive. Surviving the storm is one thing, but now they face the greatest challenge of their lives — getting through the long, difficult days of rebuilding, repairing, and for some, burying loved ones and starting over.

Who will be there for them during that time? The arm of the government can only stretch so far. The compassion of strangers — which has been shown immensely — only lasts for so long. The survivors of Hurricane Harvey and Hurricane Irma need something more than the aid of man to get them through this difficult and lonely time. They need someone who will always be there for them. And the only Person Who can and will — and wants to — do that is Jesus Christ. In the Bible, Jesus told His followers, “I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee.” He said, “Behold, I am with you alway even to the end of the world.” Continue Reading…

Hurricane Irma and the Importance of Taking Heed to Warnings (Gospel Light Minute X #287)

This is the “chief of sinners,” Daniel Whyte III, president of Gospel Light Society International, reminding you of what the Bible says, that “Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners” like you and me.

With Hurricane Irma, the most powerful hurricane ever to form in the Atlantic, bearing down on Florida this weekend, hundreds of thousands of people in southern Florida were given the warning to leave their homes and go somewhere where they would be safe from the storm. One police department told residents that they would not be able to help anyone who didn’t flee the storm and chose to remain behind. Those who take heed to the fair warnings stand a better chance of surviving the calamity. Those who don’t put their own lives at risk.

In our society, we value the benefits of a fair warning. We have tornado warning systems that sound off telling people that they need to get to shelter as quickly as possible. The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center monitors the effects of earthquakes around the Ring of Fire and lets communities know when they need to warn people to move to higher ground. We rely on weather forecasts in order to determine how we need to prepare for the next day or the next week. If we take heed to the fair warnings that we receive, we can stay out of a lot of trouble and avoid many tragic situations.

Thankfully, we have also been given fair warning about the worse thing that can befall any one of us, and that is the eternal consequences of our sins in a place called hell and rejecting the free gift of Salvation through Jesus Christ that can deliver us from those consequences. When a group of religious people came to John the Baptist to be baptized, John asked them, “Who hath warned you to flee from the wrath to come?”

God’s Word gives us ample warning of the wrath to come. This wrath will be the righteous outpouring of justice on those who do not repent of their sins and who reject Salvation through God’s Son, Jesus Christ. The Bible says that “in flaming fire,” [God] will take “vengeance on them that know not God, and that obey not the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ: [They] shall be punished with everlasting destruction from the presence of the Lord, and from the glory of his power.” Those who do not make the decision to get to know God on this earth will miss that opportunity for all of eternity and will suffer eternal punishment because of it. They will have no excuses when they stand before God because they have been given fair warning.

Will you respond to this fair warning today? You can flee the wrath of God just as thousands have fled the wrath of Irma. When you stand before God, I want you to be able to say that you took heed to the warnings that He gave us regarding the condition of our souls on this earth and the destination of our souls in eternity. You can be saved from the wrath to come by believing on the Lord Jesus Christ for your Salvation. Allow me to show you how you can do so right now. Continue Reading…

The Main Thing God Wants You to Do In Light of the 1,000-Year Flood of Texas (Gospel Light Minute X #286)

This is the “chief of sinners,” Daniel Whyte III, president of Gospel Light Society International, reminding you of what the Bible says, that “Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners” like you and me.

The images coming out of Texas this week have been striking — water levels as high as trees and stop signs, cars and trucks submerged, people riding boats where they used to drive, entire neighborhoods reduced to what look like miniature archipelagos — just the roofs of houses visible above the waterline. So much rain has fallen thanks to Hurricane Harvey that it has set a new record for most rainfall in the continental United States. The flooding in the southern and southeastern part of the state has been unprecedented and the aftermath of the deluge has left over 50 people dead and over 30,000 people displaced.

It is hard for many, especially those who live in America, to imagine their entire community and all of their belongings washed away by a hurricane. Unfortunately, many have lost valuable possessions; for example, reports indicate that nearly a million vehicles will be declared total losses.

Seeing the flooding in my adopted state of Texas, which I love, reminds me of the Great Flood which occurred thousands of years ago. God sent that worldwide flood to not only destroy the earth, but to destroy every living thing — people and animals — except those who were safe with Noah in the ark. God sent the flood then because the people of earth had become exceedingly wicked and violent and God decided to rid the earth of them and start all over with Noah and his family and the animals.

After that flood, the Bible tells us that God put the rainbow in the sky as a sign of His promise that He would never judge the earth again by a worldwide flood. The rainbows we see today are a beautiful reminder of that promise.

However, we should also be reminded of something else from the Word of God — that God still hates sin and that we will still be judged for our actions in this life. The Bible says clearly that the “wages of sin is death” and that “all have sinned.” If you are alive, you are a sinner, and that means that you will one day die. However, death does not have to be the end of the story. God loves you and wants to save you from your sins in this life and from the eternal punishment for sin — separation from Him in a place called Hell. Whether you like it or not, that is the judgment that awaits every person who dies without taking care of their sin problem on this side of eternity.

Very briefly, I want to share with you how you can take care of your sin problem and avoid God’s judgment. Please listen carefully: Continue Reading…

Your Name is in the ‘Death Note’ (Gospel Light Minute X #285)

This is the “chief of sinners,” Daniel Whyte III, president of Gospel Light Society International, reminding you of what the Bible says, that “Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners” like you and me.

This weekend, Netflix released its highly anticipated film adaptation of the famous Japanese manga series, “Death Note.” The series follows a young man who is given a notebook by a “death spirit.” He learns that simply writing a person’s name in the notebook will cause them to die, and he goes on a mission to cleanse the world of evil by writing down the names of the bad people he knows, thus sentencing them to death.

The idea, at first, sounds far-fetched. But what if I told you that you and I have already been sentenced to die just as easily as it would be to write our name in a notebook. The Bible says, “It is appointed unto men once to die.” And, just as with the Death Note, it is our sins, the bad things that we do, that condemn us to this death. The Bible says, “The wages of sin is death.”

Whatever you believe about death and life, you must accept the fact that you are going to die. It is the default, the one common denominator, of humanity. However, God offers you a chance at life — abundant life here on earth and eternal life after you die. He offers to have your name written in “the book of life.” Revelation, the last book of the Bible, tells us that ‘the dead, small and great, will stand before God; and the books [the records of our deeds, good and bad] will be opened: and another book will be opened, which is the book of life: and the dead will be judged out of those things which were written in the books, according to their works. And whosoever is not found written in the book of life will be cast into the lake of fire.” The lake of fire is eternal death and eternal separation from God for all those whose names are not written in the Book of Life. But, those whose names are written in the book of life will enter the “new heaven and the new earth” where there will be “no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, nor pain.”

The choice is up to you. You can allow your destiny to remain the same and spend eternity in the lake of fire, or you can have your name transferred from the ‘death note’ to the ‘Book of Life.’ If you want to live in the new heaven and the new earth with God for eternity, allow me to show you how you can make the decision to do that today. Michael Sharkey: “My Faith is an Important Part of the Game” (Gospel Light Minute #229)

Michael Sharkey

Daniel Whyte III

Daniel Whyte III

He is a member of Great Britain’s goalball team. He was born with a congenital eye condition called retin-i-tis pig-men-to-sa which is a condition that makes sight in dark places difficult and causes one to be short-sighted. Despite his disability, he made his Paralympic debut at the London 2012 games where he competed in the preliminary stages. Outside of goalball, he serves as a physiotherapist for young children with special needs.

In an article for Beyond the Ultimate, he wrote of his upbringing and faith in Christ, “I have grown up in a Christian family. God is a very big part of my life. I believe that what I am doing in my sport is what God made me to do. He has given me this talent, and I want to invest in it, confident that it is bringing glory to Him.

“I think that when we are given talents by God we should invest them, like the parable where Jesus talks about giving one person 10 talents, another 5 talents, and another 1 talent. Each of them do different things with their talents. The ones who invest their talents would come back in a year’s time and give back to Jesus twice what they had been given; the person who had 1 talent had been so scared of losing his talent that he buried it. He wasted the talent and had not been able to grow with it. I think it is important that whatever talent we have been given, we should invest in it as much as possible. By doing that, we bring glory to God and are doing what God made us to do.

“My faith is an important part of the game. I try to pray before every game and give that game to God, to quietly affirm to Him that what I am doing is for Him and for His glory. I think if you ask the Holy Spirit to be with you, you have a strength that you can’t have without Him. That helps my performance, because it brings me into a good psychological place in my mind and helps me be ready for the challenge.

“When I was younger, I prayed a lot that I would be healed of my visual impairment, that God would take this difficulty away from my life. I was about 13 and it was quite a big moment when I prayed that prayer. Obviously, I did not have my sight healed. If I had, everything in my life would have been totally different, and I don’t know what that would have done for me. There would have been no goalball; I would not have met my wife; I would not have had all the friends I have.

“I certainly do not blame God for afflicting me with a disability. It has been a blessing for the most part in my life. I feel that by praying that prayer when I was younger, it brought me to a place in my mind where I could deal with the fact that I was disabled and move on and make something of my life rather than wondering how on earth I was going to cope.”

His name is Michael Sharkey.

This is the “Chief of Sinners,” Daniel Whyte III, president of Gospel Light Society International, reminding you of what the Bible says, that “Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners” like you and me. Just as Michael Sharkey trusted Jesus Christ as his Saviour, may I encourage you to do the same. Here is how:

1. Accept the fact that you are a sinner, and that you have broken God’s law. The Bible says in Ecclesiastes 7:20: “For there is not a just man upon earth that doeth good, and sinneth not.” Romans 3:23 reads: “For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God.” In fact, I am the chief of sinners, so don’t think that you’re alone.

2. Accept the fact that there is a penalty for sin. The Bible states in Romans 6:23: “For the wages of sin is death…”

3. Accept the fact that you are on the road to hell. Jesus Christ said in Matthew 10:28: “And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.” The Bible says in Revelation 21:8: “But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.”

4. Accept the fact that you cannot do anything to save yourself! The Bible states in Ephesians 2: 8, 9: “For by grace are ye saved through faith: and that not of yourselves: it is a gift of God. Not of works, lest any man should boast.”

5. Accept the fact that God loves you more than you love yourself, and that He wants to save you from hell. Jesus Christ said in John 3:16, “For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”

6. With these facts in mind, please repent of your sins, believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and pray and ask Him to come into your heart and save you this very moment. The Bible states in the book of Romans 10:9, 13: “That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised Him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.”

“For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.”

Dear friend, if you are willing to believe on the Lord Jesus Christ for salvation, please pray with me this simple prayer: Heavenly Father, I realize that I am a sinner and that I have done some bad things in my life. For Jesus Christ sake, please forgive me of my sins. I now believe with all of my heart that Jesus Christ died for me, was buried, and rose again. Lord Jesus, please come into my heart and save my soul and change my life today. Amen.

If you believed in your heart that Jesus Christ died on the cross, was buried, and rose again, allow me to say, congratulations on doing the most important thing in life and that is accepting Jesus Christ as your Lord and Saviour! For more information to help you grow in your newfound faith in Christ, go to Gospel Light Society.com and read “What To Do After You Enter Through the Door”. Jesus Christ said in John 10:9, “I am the door: by me if any man enter in, he shall be saved, and shall go in and out, and find pasture.”
