Why Can’t We Be Friends? (Gospel Light Minute X #284)

Over forty years ago, the American funk band War released a simple song titled, “Why Can’t We Be Friends?” In less than four minutes, the question is asked forty times — “Why can’t we be friends?”

With recent events in our nation and around the world, many people find themselves asking that question today.

Everywhere we look, we seem to find strife, disunity, and hatred between different individuals and groups of people. It seems as though these negative feelings are being acted upon more than ever. In Charlottesvile, VA, neo-Nazis, white supremacists, and shameless racists marched, chanting anti-Jewish, anti-black, and anti-immigrant slogans. They clashed with protesters holding an opposing demonstration, leading to the death of one young woman and two police officers. Around the world, attacks in Spain, Finland, and Russia, driven by radical Islamic ideology, left 15 dead and nearly 150 wounded. Millions of people in Japan, South Korea, Guam and now the United States fear that North Korea’s leader will turn his threats of nuclear war into action causing death and bloodshed the likes of which the world has never seen. In our own communities, innocent people are shot to death simply because they are in the wrong place at the wrong time; husbands and wives who are supposed to love and protect each other are instead shooting and killing each other, their children, and themselves. Random, senseless violence seems to be par for the course of life. We often shake our heads in disbelief and wonder, why can’t people just get along? Why can’t we be friends?

There is a real answer to that seemingly theoretical question. The reason why we can’t be friends is very simple: it is because of sin and selfishness. Unfortunately, because every human being has a sin nature, we will never be able to live on earth in a completely peaceful and harmonious manner. While we should never cease striving for it, utopian societies aren’t the stuff earth is made of.

However, there is a place where humans will live and get along with each other in peaceful harmony. There is a place where we can, and will, all be friends. Black people, White people, Latinos, Asians, Indians, Africans, Arabs — people of every color and nationality — will one day live in perfect peace together in Heaven. Notice this verse from Revelation in the Bible. John, the writer of the Book says, “After this I beheld, and, lo, a great multitude, which no man could number, of all nations, and kindreds, and people, and tongues, stood before the throne, and before the Lamb, clothed with white robes, and palms in their hands.” All of these people are in Heaven gathered around the throne of God. Later in this same chapter, John writes “They shall hunger no more, neither thirst any more; neither shall the sun light on them, nor any heat. For the, Lamb (Jesus Christ) which is in the midst of the throne shall feed them, and shall lead them unto living fountains of waters: and God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes.”

In this place called Heaven, there will be no car-ramming attacks, no violent protests, no knife-wielding terrorists, no shootings, no hatred, no strife, and no discord. In Heaven, everyone will be friends with God and friends with each other. Do you want to be a part of this Heavenly multitude of peace, tranquility, friendship, and harmony? Do you want to live in Heaven where people truly do get along with each other, where they truly are friends forever? Let me show you how.

First, you must realize and admit that you — just as myself — are a sinner, and that you have broken God’s laws. The Bible says in Ecclesiastes 7:20: “For there is not a just man upon earth that doeth good, and sinneth not.” Romans 3:23 reads: “For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God.” Our sin nature is the reason why we do not get along with each other on earth.

Second, you must understand that there is a penalty for sin. The Bible states in Romans 6:23: “For the wages of sin is death…” — spiritual death and physical death. We die physically and go to the grave because of sin and we die spiritually and go to hell because of sin.

Third, you must understand that you are on the road to hell because of your sins. Jesus Christ said in Matthew 10:28: “And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.” The Bible says in Revelation 21:8: “But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.”

Fourth, you must accept the fact that you cannot do anything to save yourself! The Bible states in Ephesians 2: 8, 9: “For by grace are ye saved through faith: and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God. Not of works, lest any man should boast.”

Fifth, you must accept the fact that God loves you more than you love yourself, and that He wants to save you from hell. Because of God’s love for you, he sent his Son, Jesus Christ, to pay the penalty for your sin. Jesus Christ said in John 3:16, “For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” Because God sent His Son, Jesus Christ, to die on the cross for our sins, we can live with God in Heaven for all eternity after we die.

Finally, with these facts in mind, you must repent of your sins, believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and pray and ask Him to come into your heart and save you this very moment. The Bible states in the book of Romans 10:9, 13: “That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised Him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.” “For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.”

If you are willing to trust Jesus Christ as your Saviour, please pray with me the following prayer to seal your decision once and for all: Holy Father God, I realize that I am a sinner and that I have done some bad things in my life. I am sorry for my sins, and I want to turn from my sins. For Jesus Christ sake, please forgive me of my sins. I now believe with all of my heart that Jesus Christ died for me, was buried, and rose again. I want to trust Jesus as my Savior and follow Him as Lord from this day forward. Lord Jesus, please come into my heart and save my soul and change my life today. Amen.

If you just trusted Jesus Christ as your Saviour, and you prayed that prayer and meant it from your heart, I declare to you that based upon the Word of God, you are now saved and you are on your way to Heaven. Welcome to the family of God! I want to congratulate you on doing the most important thing in life and that is receiving Jesus Christ as your Lord and Saviour.
